Behind the Design: The Story of Mim and Pa’s Diner
When I started brainstorming ideas for my senior thesis, I knew I wanted to create something close to my heart—something that felt like home. That’s how Mim and Pa’s Diner came to life, inspired by my amazing grandparents and the simple, beautiful life they’ve built together.
My grandparents, Mim and Pa, got married young, raised their family, and lived a life filled with love, hard work, and helping others. They’ve always been so community-focused and giving, and I wanted to honor that spirit in this project. Creating Mim and Pa’s Diner wasn’t just about design—it was about telling their story and showing how much they mean to me.
Why This Project Was So Special
The best part of working on this project was knowing I was doing it for them. I got to bring them into my art in a way that felt meaningful and genuine. I’m so family-oriented, so incorporating their lives and love story into the design was incredibly important to me.
The project was sparked by something my aunt said one day, “If I ever opened a diner, I’d call it Mim and Pa’s.” My Aunt loved diners and that simple comment stayed with me, and it became the heart of this project—a tribute to my grandparents and their incredible legacy.
I leaned into an old-school diner vibe that still feels like it could exist today—full of charm but also modern enough to resonate with anyone. It’s a blend of nostalgia and timelessness, just like Mim and Pa.
The Big Reveal
When the project was done, I made sure to show it to them first. I even wrote up a little synopsis and read it to them before anyone else could share the details. They were so cute about it—they said, “We’re going to be famous!”
One of my favorite parts of the project is that I used their wedding picture in one of the pieces of artwork. Seeing that image up on the wall was so special for them, and for me, it’s the detail that always catches my eye. It’s their picture, their story, their love—and it’s the heart of the entire design.
What Mim and Pa’s Diner Means to Me
This project reminded me how powerful art can be. It’s not just about creating something visually appealing—it’s about connection. It’s about capturing a moment, a memory, or a story and sharing it with others.
Mim and Pa’s Diner will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s a celebration of my grandparents, their life, and the values they’ve passed on to our family. And every time I look at it, I can’t help but smile.
